How you will help
Immediate needs (in order of priority)
- Clean water
- Food
- Shelter
- Medical supplies and mosquito nets
- Reclaiming land contaminated by sea water and corpses
- Public education
Long-term projects
Through our work we will revitalize and help restore the villages of 10,000 plus disaster victims. We are also in the process of negotiating to rent 40 acres of land to plant rice for future needs.
Water
Most wells in the area are contaminated and need to be pumped out several times before they can be used again (salt water, dead animal & human remains).
Needs:
Immediate relief:
- Bottled water ($1/bottle)
Long term:
- Water pumps to pump out wells.
- 7 horsepower 4in. pumps - $500/ea.
Food
As many people have been forced to return back to their villages with barely enough food to last for 3-4 days, they are in desperate need at the present. Most of the villages we are intending to assist have not been reached by NGOs or the government.
Needs:
Immediate relief:
- bags of rice ($6/person/month)
- 50kg of rice can sustain a family of four for one month
Long term:
- Rice tillers & fuel to plough the paddies and plant the crops.
- A common hand directed rice tiller costs $1,500 each
- For $2,000 a tiller and fuel for 30 days can be purchased
- One tiller will service 30 families in 30 days
- The local fishermen urgently need canoes and fishing nets.
- Canoes cost $200/ea. Nets cost $100/ea. This set (canoe and net) will support 2-3 families.
- Long-term, they propose to build their own canoes over a 6-month period, but need lumber and building supplies.
Shelter
The UN reports that there are still an estimated 1.5 million people who are homeless.
Needs:
- Bamboo shelters with wood floors built on cement pillars that are strong enough to withstand a strong storm. Blankets, clothes, mosquito nets and cooking utensils are basic items that are to be included in each new shelter.
- $500 for the shelter, $90/family for basic setup-kit
Medical supplies
Mosquitos are muliplying rapidly in the numerous pools of stagnant water. Malaria, Dengue and other Mosquito borne diseases are spreading rapidly. The wounds of the surviors have to be treated.
Needs:
- Mosquito nets, antibiotics, other basic medicine.
Public education
Thousands of children now have no school left to attend. Temporary schools need to be constructed and education restarted. Parents need to be educated in disease prevention, basic medical care, and soil decontamination.
