HOMESCHOOLING

Discover more about our Program

4.1 Homeschooling Program

To facilitate continuous learning for children whose education is suffering from the unstable political situation, due to the military coup, Hi Burma has established a range of Homeschooling programmes across Myanmar. For many reasons, but mainly the crimes against humanity committed by the military, parents did not send their sons and daughters to school when the military reopened them. That is when Homeschooling was started by our teachers, mostly in remote rural areas. They are very enthusiastic about learning and teaching and are passionate about making valuable contributions to their respective communities.

Our teachers create engaging lessons that emphasize the use of creative and critical thinking in daily life. These lessons are designed to help students develop the learning and communication skills they need for the 21st century. To enable students to work efficiently and productively in their various situations, teachers provide group activities in addition to a variety of classes centered on science, maths, English, and art. We have Homeschooling centres in the states of Kachin, Kayah and Shan , also in the regions of Mandalay, and Sagaing.

Homeschooling Teacher

Nway Oo Maung

I started educating children in my local community, because I am passionate about teaching and I want to share my love of learning. In this uncertain political atmosphere, I can't support the reopening of schools. Through my teaching, I have witnessed the improvement of my students' scholastic abilities. They can read books without difficulty; apply what they've learned in maths; and dare to speak in front of people, even though they missed schooling for three years because of their parents financial constraints since the Covid – 19 pandemic. I am proud of our efforts that oppose violence and reinforce the CDM movement. When democracy is restored, I will return to normal teaching and be actively engaged in changing the education system of Myanmar to make it better quality.

Our Success Story

Hnin Mya

My name is Hnin Mya Aye and I am 13 years old. I am a student in teacher Steven's Homeschooling class. Firstly, I am going to tell you about my situation before attending this class. Actually, when I started learning, I had some difficulties in maths and English. In English, I couldn't read some sentences and vocabulary. In maths, I couldn't calculate or solve problems in some exercises because I stopped learning two years ago. Therefore, I was dismayed about my studies at first. After attending for two months in teacher Steven's class, I can read some sentences and complete almost all of the exercises in maths. In conclusion, I know I can improve my skills and I want to go back to my school, if it is in a good situation. I really thank Hope Institute Burma because of your encouragement, support and help; I improved a lot. I hope that you will always be there for us and I love all of you.

Thurein

I am a student from the Hi Burma Homeschooling program in Mandalay. When schools reopened, I was
willing to go to school, but my parents couldn’t accept the current situation and didn’t like the poor education
system. They adamantly refused to let me go to school. Luckily, I got a chance to join a Homeschooling
program for continuous learning on my education journey. After I joined this class, I didn’t want to go to
school anymore. I always told his parents and siblings what I had learned, such as addition and subtraction in
maths; names of vegetables, fruits, food; and other everyday words. I am very happy as I have improved my
English compared to the first day. I want to learn art and painting in the future. I also say thank you so much
to the teacher and Hi Burma for organising this kind of program for me.
